Week 4

What an awesome week here in room 204!  Here’s a look into next week…

Reminders for Next Week:

Looking Ahead to Next Week

Kindergarten Success Night / PTA Open House

Goodies with Grandparents

Looking Ahead to Next Week:

Phonics: We will be introducing letters h, n, and j. We will be using these new letters with letters we have already learned to create words by discussing how letters work together to make words.

Reading: We will be focusing on print concepts (reading left to right, top to bottom) as well as the job of an author and an illustrator.

Writing:  We will be creating our own version of our mentor text “My Map Book”. We will be creating pages (“maps”) about our faces, bedrooms, families and classrooms. We will also practice labeling our maps.

Math: We will be focusing on numbers 6 & 7, by discussing sets and one to one matching.

Social Studies:  We will introduce the concept of what a map is, and discuss how maps are important to us as we navigate through the community.

Sight Words: dad, mom, love (be, me, see, we-we talked about these in class last week.)  (Please remember, sight words are assessed often)

Kindergarten Success Night / PTA Open House:

Kindergarten Success Night will take place on Tuesday, September 6 from 5:40 – 6:20. This will be an opportunity for you, as a parent, to find out more of exactly what we’re about here in OES Kindergarten. We will discuss things like how we use a station rotation for Math and ELA, what exactly PBL is, and more. Following Kindergarten Success Night, PTA Open House will be at 6:30 in the cafeteria. You will have a chance to come to our classroom after the portion in the cafeteria.

Goodies with Grandparents:

On Monday, September 12 from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m. in the OES cafeteria, grandparents will be welcome to come enjoy a special breakfast with our friends.

Week 4

Our sight words this week will be the, yes, & no.  Please be sure you are using the sight word activities in their homework folder to help them retain their words each week.  We will learn sight words at a quick pace and it becomes difficult to catch up if you fall too far behind.  Pinterest is also loaded with great sight word activities.  Please review the weekly assessment each week with your child, focusing on any areas where your child has errors, as these skills will be on the interim and report card.  It is important that we work together to strengthen any areas of weakness early.
We will be learning the letters and sounds for: Rr, Hh, and Nn.  Please review these letters and sounds at home.  We will be finishing our "all about the numbers" posters on Monday.  We will continue learning to identify the numerals zero to ten.  Students have also been practicing counting to 100.  A few students have already mastered this skill...Yeah!!!!!  We will be learning about reading and making maps.  Can your child make a map of their bedroom?  We will find out midweek!  We will also be learning about book parts.  Ask your child to sing you the song telling what authors and illustrators do for their job.  We are practicing reading 100 Book Challenge books in class.  We will be sending these home with your child after Open House.
Just a reminder that Goodies with Grandparents will be in the lunchroom from 7:00 to 7:30 Monday for kindergarteners.  Can't wait to see you there!
