Week 11

We will continue learning about fall and it's affect on plants and animals.   We will be reading and writing about fall as well.  Our new sight words will be: to, do, on, for.  We will continue learning about the teen numbers.  We will visit the pumpkin patch on Wednesday to learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin.  We will further explore pumpkins on Friday and find the answer to this week's wonder of the week.  This week's wonder is do pumpkins sink or float?

I look forward to meeting with each of you this week for parent teacher conferences.  We will have our annual fall festival on Thursday night.  Please remember to send in items for our Little Diva basket.   Also remember that this is book fair week and there will be no school on Friday.  We will be continuing our study of fall in reading, writing, and science.  We will begin numbers in the teens in math.

Week 9

Next week will be reviewing and assessing for the final time this nine weeks.  It is hard to believe we're already at the end of the nine weeks!  We will be taking a unit assessment in math on numbers zero to ten.  To help your child prepare for this assessment, please review these numbers to be sure they recognize the numbers and can count objects in this range.  We will not have new sight words this week to give us a chance to review and reassess.  If your child missed any sight words, letters, or letter sounds on the weekly assessments, we will be reassessing those this week so be sure to review them at home.  We will continue investigating changes we see during fall.  We will be writing about our findings.  Our wonder of the week will be:  Why do leaves change color in autumn?  Remember you can research and respond in the comments section.  We will be using Wonderopolis to search for an answer in class.  Help us investigate this question at home.  We had a visitor come to class on Tuesday to talk to us about seasonal changes.  She brought this bullfrog with her for us to see.

Friday October 10, 2014

We have had a very busy Friday!  We started our day with a Buddy Bench dedication.  At the end of the day the BS fire department came in and spoke to us about fire safety.

Remember if you have not already signed up for a conference time, follow the link I sent you to secure your time.  Thanks!

Parent teacher conferences

Parent teacher conferences will be coming up in a few weeks.  I am trying a new tool to help parents sign up for the time that works best with their schedule.  I will be sending information home today on how to sign up.  The earlier you sign up, the more spots will be available, increasing your chances of getting the time you want.  This website should make it easier for to to schedule your conferences so that if you have multiple children, you can arrange their times close to each other.  I can notify your other child's teacher of the time you sign up for so they can plan their schedule accordingly.  Don't forget to check your child's folder today for instructions.  I hope this tool will make it easier for you to choose a time that works for you.

Walk to school

We celebrated Walk to School day yesterday by walking around our campus.  We also had visitors from Boiling Springs High School and Wofford College.  They spoke to us about making healthy choices.

Wonder of the week

We are using the website Wonderopolis in class question the world around us.  We begin to look at the world and ask questions about what we see.  Wonderopolis is a great source to support inquiry in the classroom.  We look at their pictures and ask our own questions.  We also read their questions and try to find answers.  I encourage you to explore Wonderopolis with your child.  I will be posting our wonder of the week here for you to discuss and research with your child at home.  You may post your thought, questions, or findings in the comment section.  We will read these from time to time in class and respond as a class.  Thank you for helping your child find answers and help us answer our questions.  This wee our wonder is, "Why does food decay?".  We are performing an experiment in class to see what makes food decay faster, air, salt water, vinegar, or lemon juice?
After five days, we have concluded that salt water and lemon juice help preserve freshness while air and vinegar cause foods to decay.
